Brookline musician, producer, promoter Digney Fignus was best known for his 1984 hit "Girl with the Curious Hand." Today, WZLX-FM is playing and promoting Fignus'"Boston Town," a brand-new American-style tune that 'ZLX and the mayors office declared the "Boston Anthem." Fignus a Fixture here since he arrived with the new-wave band the spikes in the early '80s, didn't go looking for this flash of fame. He was busy producing a recording for a country singer last month when his wife, Kim English appeared on Charles Laquidara's Big Mattress to talk about her days as a cook with The Who. At one point, Laquidara invited Fignus to join them by phone. When he did, the DJ challenged him to enter the "Boston Anthem" contest-"ZLX's first step in an all out campaign to replace "Dirty Water" as the Hub's rock theme song. It didn't take long for "Boston Town to take shape in Fignus' head. He recorded it and gave it to Laquidara to play. "He disced it on the air because it was acoustic." Fignus says "But he got a call from someone who really liked it, so I decided to try it again. I found a band out of the blue. We went into the studio, knocked the thing out... and the judges loved it." So much so that they invited Fignus and his ad hoc band to play live in last Friday's on-air competition. "I couldn't believe it," Fignus says. "A band I hadn't known On Friday the 13th. At 7:30 in the morning in a bar and we won.!"
